JetBlue is charging $7 for a pillow and a blanket? Finally an idea whose time has come! I've ripped the airlines in this space in the past for charging stupid amounts of money for everything from snacks to beer to a second piece of luggage but here's one idea that actually makes sense. No more "recycled" blankets and pillows... you can now get an "eco-friendly" travel blanket and pillow as well as a $5 coupon to Bed Bath & Beyond. How can you lose? I mean how many times have you boarded a plane and they've got like 15 blankets and 20 pillows for 90-passengers? Answer, too many times. Another thing to keep in mind is the cleanliness of those "free" pillows and blankets. I worked at a station where our investigative unit took a black light to some of them and let's just say it sent chills up everyone's spine.

Hey, no one says you gotta buy the package... you can still bring your own pillow and blanket but at least this time you don't feel so fleeced. A new pillow, a new blanket and a $5 coupon to Bed Bath & Beyond all for 7 bucks? To me that adds up to a good night sleep in the air and on the ground. How about you?

Ock, it IS a fabulous idea, I personally have two problems with it: A:, I can't afford an airline ticket, and B:, when I'm actually on a plane, I can't sleep! (I've even "red-eyed" cross country and stayed awake)

Maybe the seven dollars will go to cleaning these germ infested pillows.

I find the whole idea of flying alacarte ridiculous. For the price of tickets today the Air lines should be glad anyone is flying at all. They charge us for cocktails, soda, peanuts, seats with more leg room, extra luggage, and when they lose that piece of luggage do they reimburse us for it? NO!!!! We the passengers have to eat not only the cost of the luggage but the entire cost of the contents in the luggage. Is that fair? NO!!!! But they get away with charging us for the extra piece don’t they? I don’t mind paying for the extra piece of luggage as long as the Air Lines accepts responsibility for the luggage and is willing to pay me for it if they lose it.

7 dollars for a blanket and pillow and a 5 dollar coupon to bed and bath, WOW!!! Such a deal. Where do I sign up? Another way for the Air Lines to make money and a gimmick to get everyone into Bed Bath & Beyond, proving everyone has BB&B in their town, city or state. What happens to the people who don’t have one? And if you do, what can you actually buy in BB&B for 5 dollars? Nothing that’s what. They just want to get us in their to spend more money. I guess they didn’t get enough from us with all the other extra things their charging us for.

Sorry if I sound negative Mark, but I’m sick and tired of everyone trying to put their hands in our pockets and taking advantage of us. Things that we got for nothing are costing us money; ridiculous…The well is dry!!!!! Sorry…

jovanone,

Take heart, my wife told me a while ago...Bed Bath & Beyond coupons are good at Linens and things too. Dates don't really matter either. But you bring up some excellent points...I don't want to pay any more than I have to...but I still think this one has more merit than many of the other ala carte items we're now forced to choose from. And remember, you don't have to buy 'em.

Jovan, Ock's right that this has more merit than other things you have to choose from...I'm just wondering, however, how long it will take for someone who flies to not want to spend (or not have the money to spend) on water and become seriously ill/possibly die from DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) that leads to pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs that block oxygen intake). And then, how long it takes said person/said person's estate to sue the airlines.

Mark,

True we don’t have to buy them. So, I guess I’ll just have to be content with being cold, tired, hungry, cramped and happy to be wearing the same clothes for the rest of my vacation since they lost my luggage.

What’s next pay toilets on Air planes? Coming soon to an Air Lines near you PAY TOILETS!!!! Save all you’re your spare change or redeem your 5.00 coupon for two free entries. LOL

I think Linens and things is even more expense. The 5.00 coupon only allows you to browse. LOL

What airlines need to do is charge more for tickets. Its that simple the American public has gotten accustom to flying coast to coast for $250 on "walmart" airlines. with skyrocketing oil and fuel prices. Airline are reducing flights, parking planes, furloughing and laying off employees. If people want the services that they were accustom to flying in the past. Either pay higher ticket prices, government owned airline, or maybe price per a mile or by weight. Some other options are flying in turboprop airliners which are more economical than RJ's on the shorter flights.

Whenever I fly, I make sure to do the following: A) Eat a nice, hefty meal about 30 minutes before boarding (usually at an eatery right at the terminal) and B) Pack a book bag with water, aspirin, blanket, a book and my ipod. I need NOTHING from them! LOL! I usually fall right asleep from the 'hefty meal' and the music in my ears. :)

Jov, just so you know, for $5, BB&B has these wonderful potpouri packets that come 5 for $4.00. You poke a couple of holes in them and stick them in your drawers and all your undies & t-shirts and stuff will smell fantastic! OR, you can poke holes in them and hang them in your closet in between your clothes....I'm telling you, you will always smell FANTASTIC!! My favorite is White Cotton. I have them in every drawer and every closet in my house. Wonderful!!!!

jovanone,

Shhhhhhhhhh....don't give the airlines any more ideas! And gearmonkey, Maria and I were talking about that on the air last week. Just increase the overall price of the ticket and stop nickle and diming travelers and people would be more accepting.

Mark,

I know I thought of that after I said it. LOL Let's keep our fingers crossed that, that doesn't happen or their going to find a lot of bloated people on board bursting at the seems.

Mmmmmm.... gin & tonic. Lots of limes please! I think if people are going to fly somewhere (if it is for pleasure) you should just expect to pay a lot for everything! If you want or need to be "frugal" stay home! or go to the beach, or the local spa! sheesh.

I don't like the idea of paying ala carte on an airplane, but they are providing a service and I am under no obligation to use that service. Just say no. I think that I could survive a flight in the U.S. without a pillow, blanket, drink or stale peanuts.

Why the airlines don't just charge a fuel adjustment charge of say $50. The cruise ships, charge $50 per person for fuel adjustment. Once fuel decreases it can be adjusted. Charging for extra bags or pillows is an undertimined amount. The airlines claim that fuel costs $300 per ticket, then why do they sell a ticket for less than that?? Evrything has fuel adjustment charges today. When the super market gets a delivery there is a fuel charge, and they pass it on to us.I think the airlines intentionally operate around bancruptcy, because they figure the government will bail them out if needed..

mark, back in 07 I took a flight to vegas. myself and the president of my company left on a red eye so we could sleep off the 5 hour flight. We were given a pillow and blanket and drifted off to sleep as did my boss. He was awoken and tapped me to say "Mary are you itchy" ?, Something is biting me ! To make this story short : BE VERY CAREFUL OF AIRLINE BEDDING.
