Apparently, it's a legitimate question to ask Blackberry owners or users of other PDA's after a recent survey revealed that if forced to choose, 35% said they'd pick their PDA over their spouse! No wonder the divorce rate in this country is so high! The survey included 1,500 people and was conducted on behalf of Sheraton Hotels.

Other interesting findings:

  • 87% of professionals bring their PDA (Personal Digital Accessory) to the bedroom.
  • 85% say they check their PDA's in the middle of the night.
  • 84% say they check their PDA's just before they go to bed and as soon as they wake up.
  • 80% say they check their email before morning coffee.

Now, I don't own a PDA (at least not yet) but I know people who do (Maria) and I gotta say they're pretty crazy about 'em. This crazy? I hope not, but we may want to change the name to PAD or Personal Attachment Device!

Mark,

I am posting from my BlackBerry right now. I gotta say, I love it. It makes my work so much easier, and yes, I check it while lying in bed in the morning and before I go to bed at night. I was at a great wedding on Saturday night and it bothered me to see a few guests there pretty much glued to their hand-held during dinner. Their is a time and a place to glue ourselves to these things. I would never put my BlackBerry before a love interest. If I'm out to dinner or at a social engagement I leave it on Vibrate and checkit in the mens room, if at all.

I'm guilty of almost walking into things while checking emails. What kills me the most is seeing people driving while using a "pad".

Wait until you eventually get one Mark, you'll knaow what I mean.

Here's the deal Ock. If I could figure out how to email this response from my phone I would. I love being connected, but as far as those percentages, I'm out. I don't bring it into the bedroom, I don't check it in the middle of the night. But in this business, I've had my share of answering the phone in the middle of the night. And I run and clear my head before I clutter it back up again. That's NOT to say I don't enjoy, being able to have a ton of information at my fingertips. So, why don't you join me on the dark side ock? It's fun over here!

I can't believe that a Blackberry would actually take priority over a spouse!!!!
Don't people even matter anymore?
It seems that "things" are more important.
I am all for technology, but there are some things that are still far more important, like family & friends.

SirB,

Funny you mention walking into things.

I was exiting dunkin donuts today and a jerk on there pda slammed into me and my coffEe suddenly became pert of her outfit. I can't believe the attitude she gave me. I told her to buy me a new one and she left me with some choice expletives. Un called for.

How can you love or prefer something that dosen't have the capability to love you back? I"m sure if you could somehow program feelings on to a Blackberry, it would prefer another Blackberry over you.

Mark & Maria,

Are we all so important that we can’t afford to disconnect for a little while? Do we all have to be available to everyone 24-7? At one time we were in charge of communication, and now it seems like communication is in charge of us. We all need a little down time to regroup and recharge our batteries, even Blackberries.

So far I’m with you on this one Mark, but I’m not in your line of work and I don’t know how available you have to be for your job, but if it came down to my Blackberry or family, family first.

BTW, I don’t have a Blackberry.

Is it bad that my family refers to my iPhone as my "girlfriend"? I do love my iPhone, but only like I love pumpkin whoopie pies, Cold Stone ice cream, Smuttynose IPA, and veal parm. It could never replace the people in my life whom I love from my heart. Big difference. These people need to get some therapy.

My answers...
*iPhone sits in its charging dock on my nightstand IN MY BEDROOM... check
*in the middle of the night I sleep... period
*before going to bed, i likely have used it for something, but not the last thing I do
*when I wake up, yes, I usually check stocks and email on the iPhone before rolling out of bed and running nowhere near as far as Maria does
*my coffee almost always comes from DD on my way to work

I work in Information Technology and provide support to a lot of those "Crackberry" users. It is almost a religion with those people to carry it everywhere at all times and on all occasions. Not me! I have much better things to do! :-)

Kevin,

Appreciate the honesty, Maria, I'll think about it. Everyone else...some solid points and as always thanks for writing.

SirB, you reminded me of something I saw on my vacation this summer. I was at a beach I've been going to since I was a kid when I observed a father on his cell phone constantly leaving his kids so he could walk to an area that had a better signal. This dad was really distracted by it and the kids were bummed out and I thought 10-years ago fathers and everyone else for that matter enjoyed their time at the beach uninterrupted. Life was much simpler back then and there's something to be said for that. Oh, and Kevin, it's straight to the coffee for me in the morning...everything else can wait.

Ock,

That faterh would have found a different excuse. PDA control is like gun control...blame the device, not the idiot attached to it. I have a Palm Pilot and have had one since 1998 (my wife said back then that people my age didnt use Palm Pilots!! Thank God I have empirical proof she was wrong just once!!) It is my Bible, and the kids call it that. In fact, it has become the family Bible, with the kids asking to put stuff scheduled for them in it. When Christmas comes, guess where the Christmas card list is? Etc, Etc.

I haven't gone to the "all in one" yet..I keep a seperate cell phone. I get tempted but for the convenience of Palm and phone in one, not email or online sage.

Maybe I am too old...maybe she was right....deep sigh.

Years ago when cell phones started to become more mainstream I said I never wanted one because I didn't WANT people to be able to contact me EVERYWHERE... Now I couldn't see living without one. I'm sure this will happen with the PDA/Blackberry too eventually...

If someone puts their electronics before their loved one, the marriage had problems LONG before they bought them.

Chip, I refuse to go all in one myself. I don't need the data usage charges!

Ock, I've got a PDA. Yes, it charges in my room, along with all my other cool toys, but middle of the night checking? Nope. Before coffee? No way in HADES! Preferred over relationships in my life? Depends on who the person is, but for the most part, no.

And for all you folks who don't want the all-in-one of an iPhone or Blackberry, Nokia has a cell-phone sized internet tablet that's pretty amazing. (Now that I've paid for the new ink, that's my next savings fund.)

Oh, and Maria, two things. Number 1, not that hard to post on here from a smartphone or PDA. You gotta use the web browser. Number 2, you forgot to tell Ock what I will tell him now:

If you come to the dark side, we have cookies, Ock!
