Halloween's on a Friday this year...except in the town of  Oxford where the Monster Mash has been delayed by a day. Selectmen there have voted to observe this year's Halloween on November 1st instead. Now, 24 hours might not seem like a big deal to you and me...but to kids who've had the date circled on their calendars for months, it can be an eternity! The powers that be based their decision on a study finding that the worst traffic time is 5-7 on Friday evenings. Hey I'm all for safety...but I think this is a little overboard. Let's face it, most people know to drive slower on Halloween, just as most trick or treaters know to be extra careful walking the streets in the dark. And I don't know about your neighborhood, but in mine the kids usually don't head out before 6:30 or 7 anyway. And keep in mind Daylight Saving Time ends November 2nd this year. Little ones will be with their parents and the bigger kids know better. By moving the holiday to Saturday, you've not only moved it to another day, but also another month, November 1st, All Saints Day. Ghosts, goblins, witches and saints? I say stick to October 31st, how 'bout you?

I say we just ban people from driving on October 31st. Accomplishes a couple of things, and makes a lot of different people happy. Number 1, it leaves my favorite holiday alone for all the kids to enjoy. Number 2, a day of no driving makes both gas price protesters AND environmentalists happy. And probably providers of mass transit.

Whatever Oxford decides, Ock, I'm celebrating October 31st.

I think we should leave Halloween on the traditional date of October 31. Why do some people feel that they need to change a tradition that goes back many years. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Why don't we move Thanksgiving too. Hell, while we are at it, let's move Christmas and New Year's Day. New Year's Day fall on a Thursday this year. That day sucks. Let's move it to Saturday.

Apparently, parental supervision has become obsolete. SELECTMEN are now in charge of dictating what children do.

This is rediculous, holloween should be on the 31st of october, not november 1st. If they are goin to do that, i'm surprised that they are not postponing other holidays too.

My 12 year old son has been thrilled to learn of Halloween being on a Friday night for weeks now and I hate to think that I would have to tell him he wouldn't be able to go out until Saturday. Glad I don't live in that town. Are the selectman bored? Surely there must be something more important to do. Maybe this is a Halloween "TRICK" because it certainly isn't a treat. BOO HOO.

You know, it's rather ironic that the people pretty much in charge in Medieval Europe fought so hard to have All Hallows' Eve on October 31st (Won't bore you folks with the history, but they had their reasons). Now, fast forward a few centuries and people are trying to change All Hallows' Eve to All Saint's Day. Lucky for them there's separation of Church and State!

I swear some people just don't have anything better to do, so some genius decided what's best for everyone in town, so they decided to change the day of the holiday. Great!!! I guess they feel they know what's best, right? WRONG!!!! Leave the Holiday alone....

I wish Thanksgiving was on every Friday; Christmas was on every Friday and my birthday was every three years! I wish I hit the Powerball every 6 months. Oh yeah, I wish the Oxford Board of Selectman were up for re-election right now and the kids could vote for the three who "killed" Halloween.

The reason for changing Halloween is absolutely absurd! Does the town manager actually believe that parents are incapable of keeping their kids from becoming hood ornaments? I lived on the state's most dangerous highway and my son is still quite alive at 16 1/2!

It's not too late. If the people of Oxford band together and decided to send a message, they still can. They can decide to hold Halloween on it's regularly scheduled day, like everyone else, and make sure "the board" gets a clear message that perhaps in the near future, they won't be there to make any more 'decisions'. Don't be WUZZES, Oxford!!!! Take your holiday back!!!!!!!

This is just so lame, not to mention crazy. Their reasoning behind this is that there's too much traffic on a Friday and there is less on Saturday,(?) it doesn't make any sense to me. Just leave Halloween where it belongs October 31st, not November 1st. I'm glad I don't live in Oxford.

It is dumb and what they'll find is kids from neighboring towns flocking to Oxford on the 1st go get an extra night of Halloween! Let parents provide safety for their kids and have police enforce traffic laws. Erin Hawksworth blogged also and people from Oxford are weighing in there!

Come on now politicians know what is best for us, after all we elect them don't we?

I'll bet one of these politicians has something else they need to do that night and put in for the change so they would not have to miss halloween with there kid.

I take my son trick or treating every year ON Halloween, October 31. Kids count the days until this day. Parents are with their kids and are capable of watching their children as they always do. It is in fact the PARENT'S responsibilty, not some board of selectmen who apparently do not have more pressing matters to address.

As far as the danger element, crazy drivers are ALWAYS out there and parents are AWARE.

The people of Oxford really need to take a stand and fix this. Either that or Trick or Treat ON Halloween anyways. What is the city going to do? Arrest and fine every single person in the Town of Oxford? Try it.
