A true legend of comedy passed away this weekend. George Carlin was my introduction to comedy with an "edge". My friends and I would listen to his album over and over again especially the part about the seven dirty words you could not say on television. Of course the door was usually closed so no parents could hear them being uttered...but no doubt they heard plenty of laughing from my friends and me. Carlin had that uncanny ability to take observations of everyday life and turn them into something truly funny by offering a perspective we'd never considered before.

However, I must tell you his act in recent years seemed almost mean spirited with numerous attacks on modern day America to the point where it was more annoying than funny. In fact, after watching his new special on HBO last month I came away with not only a lot of laughs, but also with a sense that the 71 year old was morphing into a whining, bitter, old man. Still, I hate to see anyone leave us so suddenly, especially someone who made people laugh so hard for so many years. To the counter-culture hero of comedy I say...rest in peace

The writer's strike in Hollywood is about what else...money...and it's hard not to side with the writers in this one. They want a bigger cut of the profits from DVD and internet royalties...but the studios say their demands are unreasonable and would hamper attempts to experiment with new media. Excuse me, but without the scripts these talented writers produce, there'd be far fewer shows to distribute to new media in the first place. On Monday, Jay Leno, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey and others paid a visit to the picket lines to show their support. They're not only funny people, but wise ones too. They know who butters their bread and they want to see the writers back at work soon and reruns of their hit shows off the air even sooner.

The last time the writers went on strike was back in 1988...the world's a whole different place since then and technology has changed incredibly. It used to be you watched a show on TV, now you can watch it on a computer, iPod or phone. It's time the writer's pay scale reflected the changing world in which we live and work. What do you think?

The Live Earth concerts have come and gone... but the true measure of their success won't be known for the next several months. Al Gore's global concerts certainly provided a lot of entertainment value but how much action people will now take against global warming remains to be seen. Hopefully it's a lot.

Watching some of the endless hours of coverage I couldn't help but feel bombarded by all the ads though. Some were creative, especially the clerk and customer trading slaps to the face over the use of plastic bags, but most were filled with statistics that began to run together after a while. The amount of similar ads back to back to back made you reach for the clicker as soon you sensed another run of PSA's were in the offing. However, the day did bring awareness to a problem we all can try and help resolve... now it's time for everyone to do their part.

A salute to a policeman for telling it like it is. How refreshing to hear Stewart Copeland, the long time drummer for the Police, being critical of the band's early performances on their reunion tour. On his website, Copeland takes swipes at his fellow bandmates Sting and Andy Summers as well as himself saying their timing at a recent concert in Vancouver was far from perfect. I'm not surprised by their lack of synchronicity especially when you consider they disbanded for 21-years, but I wonder how many other established bands would be so honest. Might they wait 'til someone catches on?

Not the Police, they're a hall of fame band that like everyone else realizes practice makes perfect. The good news here is that they don't play Boston (Fenway) 'til late July...so the've got plenty of time to work out the kinks...and no doubt they will.

So the Tweeter Center's about to get a name change. What would you call it if you could? I'd love to hear your suggestions and feel free to be as creative as you like. In the meantime, here are some of mine.

How about naming it after some great Boston bands? Like the Aerosmith Amphitheater, the Cars Coliseum or Geil's Garage? We could name it after the Stompers, remember them? Then we could simply refer to it as The Stomping Grounds.

Other possible names? Squire Center, Delp's Destination or Fool's Forest. Want to go national? How about the Mansfield Madonna or Parrott Head Park?

Okay, I'm running out of gas...but did you notice...I didn't include one corporate sponsor?

Do you have a man cave? If not, check out my story Sunday night on the FOX 25 News at 10 and you may become inspired to build one. They're also called man rooms...a male sanctuary where a guy and his friends can hang out free from females and responsibilities. Where they can watch sports and movies, shoot pool, play cards, drink beer and burp...in whatever order they like. Typically man caves can be found in a remodeled basement, but there are other retreats such as a garage, storage shed or barn. Often they feature a slew of sports memorabilia and whatever else the person is passionate about.

I don't have one...yet. But I am thinking more and more about one especially after doing the story in which I visit three different man rooms. All three had pool tables and sports memorabilia and a couple had bars...one complete with Harpoon IPA on tap. Big screen tv's, flat screen plasmas were also common...one even had an old fashioned popcorn cart and a putting green while another had a home theater with three rows of leather couches on risers!

The wives of the men featured don't seem to mind, in fact they like them because they keep their guys happy...however one did tell me that when it comes to cleaning the man cave bathroom...her hubby's on his own for that as well.

Got a man room?..I'd love to see it...send it along to:projects@myfoxboston.com

See where the Somerville theater wants to sell beer and wine. Much as I love a cold beer and an occasional glass of the grapes...I can't imagine this thing being a success. My first thought...the beer would have me running to the bathroom and missing part of the movie. I don't know about you...but I can't stand missing even a second of a flick, especially if it's a whodunnit. Of course there are other potential problems, for instance people getting too noisy after a couple of cocktails and then of course there's the underage drinker who somehow scores a bracelet.

However, the Somerville theater also hosts concerts...and in that setting I say "give me a cold one". So I guess it depends on the night. Movies and merlot are out, concerts and Coors are in. How do you feel? We'll see you at ten!

Why would Ryan Seacrest spill the beans about who he thinks will be the next American Idol...weeks before the competition ends? Better yet, why would the show's producers allow him to do so?

Seacrest tells People Magazine he believes Jordin Sparks will win adding that she's pretty, genuine and a great singer. Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but on this one...I think the show's host crossed the line. Doesn't he understand that what he says to a national publication could have a major impact on the way people vote going forward? And how would you like to be one of the remaining contestants? Granted, they are developing thick skin, but comments like his can't make them feel good.

It's one thing to say you like or dislike someone's performance along the way as judges Randy, Paula and Simon get to do on a weekly basis...but as the host of the show Seacrest should remain impartial...until AFTER the winner is chosen.

What do you think?

I'm sorry, but if you're going to be a judge on American Idol, you've got to do your homework! Paula clearly didn't do that before Tuesday night's show. When commenting on Gina's rendition of "Love Child," a number one hit in 1968 for Diana Ross and The Supremes, she told Gina it's a "happy song" and should be sung that way.

Happy? This is a song about a child born out of wedlock and the struggles and torment such a scenario can create. I'm NOT condemning illegitimate children or their parents, but I am asking why Paula didn't have a better understanding of the lyrics. If you're going to criticize someone...at least know what you're talking about.

Wow, what a shock...former Boston lead singer Brad Delp dead at 55! I couldn't believe the headline. Boston's debut album was outstanding and a must play at every party I attended back in the day. "More Than a Feeling", "Peace of Mind", "Foreplay/LongTime"...classics all.

Come on, who didn't listen closely to Foreplay to try and hear the soft drum beats as they grew louder and louder eventually leading to the one of a kind guitar chords that would rock in the start of "Long Time"? For air guitar heroes it was pure bliss!

Remember the wait for the second album? I read today it was only two years...felt like 22! The other albums weren't bad...pretty good in fact, I even have an RTZ CD. But none of the other albums were as good as the first.

While working at WGIR radio in Manchester, New Hampshire in the early '90's...I was walking down the hall one day going from the AM side of the building to the FM side when I spotted this guy in the lobby. I went into the rock station's deejay booth and said there's a guy in the lobby who's a dead ringer for Brad Delp...and the deejay said...oh, he's here? Apparently he had a recording studio in the Granite State.

A brush with greatness...rest in peace Brad Delp.
