Tonight we're exposing the state wasting millions of your tax dollars. Remember back in 2003 when Mass Highway fought with snow and ice contractors about carrying GPS phones? The state won the battle, but it turns out the GPS system had serious hardware and software problems. For example, it often looked like people were plowing in a certain area, even when they weren't. So much for keeping track of everyone...

We discovered the state spent millions on the project before finally deciding to scale it back dramatically. Now the new Chief Engineer at Mass Highway says any future GPS projects will first start out with a pilot program. That makes sense... figure out if the equipment works in one district before you make everyone get on board. If only someone had thought of that before the state wasted all your money...

Maybe the governor could learn also. Let's start with just one casino. In fact, let the Indians have theirs first and keep the state the hell away from it.

could you auction off the phones on ebay or the such as a bonus to the drivers who plowed for work served and turn the mass highway center into a state security video surveilance center as a "pilot" program and/or install tracking beacons like prisoners in the trucks if worried about sleeping on the job.

The Chief Engineer says the system does not work, that the state wasted much money. Yet the system remains turned on and in approx 25% of the hired trucks today- another large portion of the phones have been given to state employees. Chief- you siad they dont work, shut them off and use the money to pay contractors some of the 50 million you owe them!!!!

Off-topic, comment here, but PLEASE put up the transcript to tonight's story on police firearm sales. There was so much fear-mongering and anti-gun bigotry on display there, I don't where to begin. Please don't make me transcribe the whole thing off the DVR before ripping it to shreds on my blog.
