The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was signed into law in 2006. It establishes minimum standards for sex offender registries across the country. Among other things, it requires states to post the pictures of most sex offenders online so the public can find out if a sex offender is living or working in the community.

Right now in Massachusetts, only Level 3 sex offenders, who the state classifies as a high risk to reoffend, are on the Sex Offender Registry Board's website. We obtained internal emails that reveal officials in Governor Patrick's administration and other state officials are raising questions about whether Massachusetts can or will comply with the law. They cite state constitutional concerns as a potential problem.

Some victims of sexual abuse call that an excuse and say the state is putting the rights of sex offenders ahead of public safety. What do you think?

Massachusetts was the last state to pass a sex offender registry law....the LAST of 50...

California was the first...in 1947...yep, boys and girls...1947.

Pathetic, huh?

VERY pathetic.

Mike,

I think they are absolutely right. I'm all for a person 'reforming' themselves but not at the expense of my loved ones. I should know who they are, where they are and what are they doing at all times. Period.

Chip i dont think it depands what state pass the sex offender law first or last.

The point is court are letting people of with a slap.

like if you murder, rape someone. its like 20 years in jail and added something extra.

they working not only do the cops help the people who do the crime the court allows and accpet it.

state is protecing sex offenders as they do still have rights as us. But they can fix it so much better.

Did anyone expect anything different from a Patrick Administration? Have you forgotten his actions writing letters of recomendation for the early release of the kidnapping and rapist of a senior citizen? Do we still do CORY checks? Or are they too "offensive" to our criminals also?

The point I'm making, critter, is the pathetic record Massachusetts has in protecting its citizens from even something as heinous as sexual assault.

The State of California embraced this idea 60 years ago...Massachusetts hasn't embraced it yet. As Mike Beaudet so sagely pointed out, we have become a HAVEN for sex offenders.

Massachusetts, by the action of its administration, has become a SEX OFFENDER MAGNET.

Mike, dont forget about Rogers Clemens if its true about him and Mindy Mccready... :) That took also took place in Texas right? an also where they raided the Religious Compound right....Maybe they should just fence in the whole state of Massachusetts and call it a Sexual Predator Compound or Cult instead of calling it a state....

The Law Makers in Massachusetts make me sick. This should be a No Brainer to Pass any Tougher Laws on Sex Offenders and Monsters who rape children. This State is every pedophiles dream come true because Massachusetts cares more about the rights of the Sex Offenders than our children's safety and rights.I am very surprised you do not see people taking the law into their own hands when their child gets raped and the sex offender gets a slap on the wrist in our lenient Court Of Law in Massachusetts. Sex Offenders can NOT be rehabilitated at all Period. If you think that they can be rehabilitated then let them watch your kids.

I think more does need to be done to protect people from sex offenders. However, each case is different. By seeing something published on a website you have no idea if the offender was 17 & the victim was 15 or if the offender was 87 with a 15 year old victim. Unfortunately we are a society to only see the words SEX OFFENDER and completely dismiss these people as human beings.
What about the people who continously commit robbery or breaking & entering even murder? Do people not have the same hatred towards them?

littlemonkey324...yes every case is different and should be treated so. I have a friend who is a registered sex offender. ( level 1 ) who made a horrible mistake and did his time for it. Young lady sitting, drinking at a bar not of age, seducing young men. Who gets in trouble? the young men. What about the boys from Milton acadamy? People only see sex offender, they don't see what for. These people will be treated as if they have raped a 3 year old instead of making a huge mistake and in my friends case believing the girl was 21 because she was drinking at a bar and then finding out the hard way she was only 16. He did his time and lost years of his life in prison and now has to register. Yes we need tougher laws for sex offenders, but it needs to be done case by case.

Uniden..I do let my friend watch my children. And they love him as if he is family. My husband and I have great respect for him. He's a very good man. I wish most people could have his heart and love of family that he has.

I think that people who rape or molest children are one the of the most repulsive people on earth. They totally disgust me and I think that it is wrong for the state of Massachusetts to protect these sick people. If it is a girl that is 16 and is aware of what she is doing, this is a different situation. But when it is a child that is ignorant or doesn't understand what is going on, manipulated, lied to by these sex offenders, then they should lock them up and throw away the key!!!!!

Welcome to Massachusetts! I am leaving at the first opportunity... This is just another example of idiocy. We enjoy plenty of that in Mass...

I am talking about the millions of sex offenders that rape and murder kids all across the country everyday. This is a major problem. Look at Jeffrey Curley who was raped and murdered and Jessica Lunsford. Look at Adam Walsh's son. Let the people that raped and murdered these innocent children watch your kids. This state is all for sex offenders and they are flocking here like a dog flocks to a steak. Go to to the sex offender registry and see how many sex offenders raped a CHILD with force multiple times over different years. They deserve the death penalty not to be let in and out of prison.Anyone who lets a sex offender watch their children is NOT a good parent at all.Once a sex offender always a sex offender Period.Anyone messes with my child and it will be the worst mistake of their life.

Littlemonkey people that commit robbery, breaking & entering, and murder get a tougher sentence than someone who rapes a child. Where is the justice in that? The only option I see is for people with kids to get the hec out of Massachusetts or take the law into their own hands if their child gets raped by a monster sex offending pedophile. The State of Massachusetts protects sex offenders and not our children. It makes me wonder about our lawmakers and judges.

Did you ever step back to think what they did? All we hear is they are a sex offender. Did you know that if you or one of your family members had consenting sex with a 16 year old and you were also 16 you would have to register as a sex offender! Is that logical? People need to stop passing judgement on people unless they know all the facts. The media never tells the whole story only what will sell on the news stands. I think our nation is sick. You can go out and murder somebody, get a slap on the hand and go on living your life. These people that are accused of sexual crimes have to live with their pictures being posted all over the place. I'm not saying they all are not guilty, but most of them have been wrongly accused. Our country has taught our kids that if somebody looks at you the wrong way they need to tell the police. If somebody spanks you call the police. I can keep going on. Lets get our priorites straight. Focus on the people that are really an endanger to us.
Remember, never pass judgement on anybody unless you know the truth! Remember this could happen to you or somebody who is close to you. Then you might have a different out look on this.

Uniden, sex offenders have a tougher sentence. Do you know anybody who is a murder, robber or sex offender? If you not, you have no right to pass judgement.

Uniden, I think that you should read Momryan comment again because the girl that he went to jail for was in a bar!! Where were her parents? What was she doing at a bar at 16? You have to 21 plus to get in to a bar, so in that situation he has some fault but so don't her parent(s)!!!!

So this is what my Critical Thinking professor meant when he taught me about fallacies and rhetorical devices, this blog is loaded with them. NO law should be a considered a "no brainer" for approval. The backbone of our democracy is our judicial system. It is our responsibility to consider all bills carefully before passing them into law. Yes, Littlemonkey324, you said it well: each case is different and once labeled the public doesn't see the circumstances, they only see the label SEX OFFENDER. Why are we elevating sex crimes above crimes of murder, aggravated assault, B&E, robbery? I would like to know if a person convicted of murder or assault lived in my neighborhood, yet law does not require any of them to register on a national database. Because I know that all sex offenders are not identical, I believe that some are capable of being rehabilitated. I wish the same could be said of bigots.

I want to know where they are at all times. Because they feel the need to have sex with underage kids is not my fault. As my parents would say do the crime do the time.

I have a right to know who lives next to me or down the strret.
