It sounds crazy, but it's true. Thousands of wanted criminals are getting welfare benefits in Massachusetts, cash and food stamps. Kevin Horton, the former head of the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section is speaking out on the subject after retiring earlier this year. Here are the numbers he gave us:

*More than 4000 people wanted for felonies and misdemeanors are collecting cash assistance from the state

*More than 2500 wanted felons are receiving food stamps

The state's welfare department disputes the cash assistance numbers, insisting it does cut people off. But it admits it doesn't stop any wanted felons from receiving food stamps.

I tend to believe Kevin Horton, a guy with decades of experience on the State Police who has spent his career tracking down violent, wanted criminals.

Will Massachusetts now finally do the right thing?

That's the reasons there are probably so many poor people. The state has everything mixed-up. A wanted felon should be behind bars not at home sitting in front of the t.v. not doing anything recieving cash and foodstamp benefits. They should be giving to the people who really need it {like maybe elderly and disabled, or single mothers who have it really hard}.And people wonder why this state is the way it is.

Ya sure....Massachusetts is a "Maggot Magnet". This and the weakest version of Jessica's law....where do you think the criminals and pedophiles willo gravitate to?

I just don't get it! Its not just about welfair what about SSI. I can tell you about a few people that I know of that are getting SSI because they either did drugs or are just too lazy to work. I know of one person who ownes a nice looking house in Billerica and her husband ownes a tile company and they have one child and she gets SSI. Well why can't she work? If she can go out and get a new car and spend money on name brand stuff then she can get off her butt and work. Its crazy how the people who do need it can't get it and the ones who are lazy get it. I would love to get a 1200.00 check per month and sit around and do yard work all day too!

If we are going to help them well then lets help them but lets not pay there way for life either.

I can tell you that I work 60 hrs a week and I'm a single parent who would never think about getting any welfair and would rather flip burgers at McDonalds then take a hand out from the state. Nothing wrong with taken a hand out but if your 2 legs work and your 2 arms work then there is no reason why you can't work doing something.

Also why is it that ex-drug addicts who choose to do drungs get SSI and Section 8 housing?

How long am I going to have to pay for them and there recovery because they choose to do drugs? I do not mind helping out for 6 months till they get on there feet but years come on! We treat drug addicts better then we do our veterans who have served our country!

how about some information sharing last I checked the welfare department and the state police work for the same commonwealth. Why not share the addresses of the criminals and the state or local police ca "find" the crininals. End of problem. A little more common sense would go a long way.

we love to tax things in this state, but we love labels more.

we as a state know better than to support these guys, but then again if they had their own jobs, they might do what they had done before... when you back someone in a corner you better be able to help them out.

Of course, there is ANOTHER alternative. Give EVERY crimina a food stamp EBT card when he/she is released. Implant in it a tracking device and keep searchable records of where they are and what they do. Have these records maintained by the State Police.

When they have a job and can pay their own way, they will regain their privacy....

I think that we need to also look at the DTA as a place people go for help and stop asking them to be the police for every society problem. Most people committ crimes because of drug addiction and or poverty. Maybe if we gave them enough money to actually live they would not have to bounce checks. I work and can barely get by. Lets stop making social workers do the job of law enforcement and increase the money we give to people on welfare and food coupons.

mrtaxpayer,

HUH? GIVE them enough money? HUH? Maybe if we let them starve...maybe if we re-arm our public so they can protect themsleves from criminals...maybe if we stop making excuses for slackers...

mrstaxpayer, if we gave more money to drug addicts on welfare, do you really believe they will give up drugs???

The reason, imho, we have so many felons and addicts who commit crimes are on the streets collecting an income is because number one, there is nowhere to house them, and number two, it is too expensive to jail them. But, should we be sending them an income? NO!

Or, C_fox, we have created an "accountability-free" society using the same theory used by mrtaxpayer.

(wanna bet "mrtaxpayer" is truly "mrwelfarerecipient"?)

According to what I have researched, it cost around $32,000 to support a single felon in jail per year. That is over the poverty level for income, so you wonder why they don't make any great effort to jail them?

And, if a drug addict can collect money without working for it, do you think they are going to try to get better? They're getting a free ride and their drug money, too!

Sounds kinda like a "I'll do for you, and you do for me." type of setup doesn't it?

my daughter is not a felon or a druggie, she is a divorced < not her choice > with a 10 year old daughter, living in what she calls the worst complex in weymouth,my grandaughter cannot go out to play because there is sex pred.class 3 living in the same complex.the owners say he has to live somewhere, with a section 8 and getting foodstamps as well....my daughter has been on a section 8 list for 3 YRS. no child should live w/o being able to go out with other kids......i feel that if my daughter was a felon she would be in a nice home with a section 8 certificate.only in mass would this be the norm !

Isn't there a ruling when a person is a pedophile that they cannot be within so many yards of anyplace there are children? I'm sure they have that rule when it comes to school areas, but what is the difference with living areas? I think I would look into that matter, colleenagnes, to see if any legal action can be taken. And, it is rather lowly of that building owner to allow him to live there; he apparently is more concerned with getting a guaranteed rental fee than the safety of children.

And, 'sorry for your daughter's predicament.

c_fox , the building mgmt were given at least a ten page petition signed by about 100 tenants, the mgmt told them" HE PAYS HIS RENT HE NEEDS TO LIVE SOMEWHERE " there was a fire in the complex yesterday, twenty families lost everything , they said NO SPRINKLERS ,and NO SMOKE/FIRE ALARMS SOUNDED ! the managers of this complex should arrested for having all these families living in such dangerious conditions.......

It's true. I know someone who lost custody of her child due to neglect and substance abuse and then commited the crime of robbery and STILL has a section 8 apartment. That is insane. Wake up Massachusetts!
