Vote for me…I am not an Edsel.

In 1958 Ford built a car named the Edsel.  It was an engineering marvel that introduced many new auto features still used on today’s cars, but it was a marketing failure primarily due to consumers not liking the looks of the vehicle.

I view the democrat candidate’s and their rhetoric with this same analogy. Vote for me, I am not an Edsel.   We do not know what they are or what they are capable of doing, but we know one thing, they are not an Edsel.  That seems to be the mantra heard every day.  Neither of them will tell us what is under the hood or if they have good brakes or even a navigation system to get us to their as yet undefined destination.

It is ironic that a political party calling for an exit strategy from a war has no idea and will not even ask the candidates what is their entrance strategy and plans for the presidency.

Hope and change is all we hear in buzz words that lack substance and implementation plans.  They constantly speak of getting out of Iraq but they have no idea what will happen to the region or our standing in the world if we do just that.  What is their plan to get Ben Laden?  How will they make us safer?  What will their strategy cost us in men and money?

We hope they can perform, but neither has ever driven very far on any given road for us to know how they will perform.  They tout change but we do not know what kind of change we are going to get.  Will the economy slow down or speed up?  Will we change our direction?  Running in a circle to the right and then to the left is a change in direction, but is it a positive change or simply undoing what good that has already been done?  Know one asks them exactly what will they change and how will those changes affect our lives in the next four years?

Everyone wants an all inclusive lifetime maintenance plan with a new car, but that usually raises the initial price of the car or costs us a lot more in the long run for stuff we may not ever need, or use.  That is how car dealers make their money.  See the similarity with a national health care plan?

So all we can expect from these candidates is the rhetoric that they are not an Edsel.  Could they be a YUGO?

I'm suspecting that they're not Edsels, but they are in reality Power Wheels. Or maybe Big Wheels, I can't quite tell yet.

Or they could be powerless wheels with nice paint jobs like those kit cars that look like sports cars but perform like a VW.

No, Power Wheels as in those battery operated kiddie cars...Sure, they LOOK cool, but they go about .3 miles an hour and have to recharge every day. Not to mention they're made of plastic. Or the Big Wheel as in those oversized plastic tricycles...I don't even suspect they're real cars, in terms of your analogy.

Xantun, UH.....Wrong!

Check this one out.

There are reasons why Detroit and the Government does not want electric cars and performance is not one of them.

This blog is about the democrat candidates, who have no plans for our country or message beyond the words “hope” and “change” using the “vote for me because I am not George Bush” line as a reason why they should be elected to office.

GWB is not running for reelection and even the Republican candidate looks more like a liberal than GWB. So I used the Edsel car analogy. I do however; have a blog about gas vs electric cars that would fit your comment.

I was saying in terms of the "vote for me, I am not an Edsel". Sure, they're not Edsels, but they're probably Power Wheels. They're seriously kids' toys. My brother had one when he was 4. I'm NOT knocking electric real cars here.

NorthernObserver, I like your analogy; all looks and nothing under the hood!

I can't figure out why no one asks him what makes him a good Presidential Candidate!

Where did he come from?

Have any of these 'followers' bothered to look at his political history? It is weak to put it mildly. He hasn't done a thing to make any real "changes" that I can see! The only reputation he seems to have is that he is a smooth talker...a political speaker...who can answer a question without really giving you an answer...that takes some talent, and he's an expert at it!

Your analogy stinks. No offense.

Obama is more like a Prius than an Edsel or a Yugo.

Let's say Bush is an Edsel. Apologies to Edsels everywhere. John McCain is an Edsel convertible. The difference is cosmetic but it's still the same car.

The notion that McCain is a liberal where it counts is crazy talk. He is equal, almost more conservative, to Bush on Iraq. He adopted the Bush tax plan, economic plan and has even sold out on torture. How about judges, abortion, guns, stem cells.

They even have the same liberal friend, Joe Lieberman.

McCain also has a much crazier preacher to deal with.

Oh, but he gets liberal on the environment. How could I miss that?

MattyG, defending our country is neither liberal nor conservative. Saddam was a mass murderer who was funding terrorism and an enemy of the United States by his own words. Running away now is an act of cowardice. Like it or not, we have to finish the job or face the consequences.

Obama may be a Prius. He creates electric energy and spews gas from time to time. He gets a lot of mileage from little substance. Yup! I like your analogy.

C-Fox, Obama’s time is coming in the general election debates. Obama sounds good on the radio but McCain has the horse power under the hood. Obama never reached across the aisle to try and solve the nation’s problems. He is all show and no go!

I never said defending America was liberal or conservative. I was explaining McCain is very much like Bush and bad for America. Saddam wasn't funding terrorism.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the 2008 Prius is the most fuel efficient car sold in the U.S. If you think that equals no substance, you aren't a serious person.

I agree with your analogy, but hasn't Hillary already proved "what's under her hood"? Just the fact that she is still married to Bill shows her level of dedication to her chosen profession. Not only that, but she is refusing to be pushed out of the race; showing that she cannot be bullied. And she obviously believes in herself, look at the amount of her own money the she is spending! I'm not sue what you mean when you say that neither candidate has shown us "what's under their hood". Please explain.

Villy,

What do we know about either of the democrats running for President? Obama has a dismal voting record in Illinois voting present for over 150 bills. In the US Senate he has two years experience and what has he accomplished? He says he will reach across the aisle but has no record of having done that.

Hillary, where to begin? Her claim to fame is as first lady. Would you want the wife of your carpenter to build your house? Would you want your doctor’s wife to give you and exam? Would you want your dentist’s wife to drill you teeth? She has no chief executive officer experience and only 6 years in office as senator. That makes her more qualified than Obama. However, she has played to public opinion way too much. She could not answer the question on aliens getting drivers licenses in NY state for example. Her stand on our involvement in Iraq is all over the map and she said she would bomb Iran. Frankly I do not know what she is willing to do other than do everything she can to be elected. Being Married to Bill is not a great attribute. But that is their personal life and I digress.

Neither one of them will tell us their plans as president. They just tout two words hope and change. Where is the beef?

NorthernObserver,

If my carpenter's wife was a carpenter, yes I would want her to build my house. If my doctor's wife was a doctor, yes I would have her give me an exam. In fact, there's a good chance that either my carpenter or my doctor would be someone's wife! The problem is the stereotype, not the person. Bill Clinton's wife just happens to be a politician. A seasoned politician at that, so yes; I guess I would vote for my former president's wife to be the president. But thanks for asking.

Sure he was Matty. You just can't admit it. But what puzzles me is just the other day you said that back in 2003 you too were, hawkish. It must be nice to get do-overs. Maybe we should put it in the job description of the President.

Happyg has a knack for fibbing about what people say. I said I had always been hawkish until 2003 but I quickly realized the Iraq war was a bad idea and felt we shouldn't do it. I'm still a hawk but I reserve it for actual enemies, which Iraq was not.

Sometimes, blowing stuff up isn't the right option.
