Without an over-written and over-stated tribute to one of the greatest writers in Rock music I want to encourage Kinks fans and British Rock fans alike to give this great album a listen.

Since recovering from his gunshot wound Ray has wonderfully captured a fresh sound to his music and added a little Kinks flavor to his third solo album "Working Man's Cafe (New West Records). The opening track "Vietnam Cowboys" characterizes the economy in classic whimsical flair with more of an upbeat tempo compared to his angry "Low Budget" of the 70's. The title track "Working Man's Cafe" is undoubtedly the shining star of the album while "Morphine Song" gives the listener a vivid account of his recovery in intensive care following his shooting.

The album's 12 tracks (plus 3 bonus) does not have any disappointments. It is poignantly written with as much candor and superb arrangement as any of The Kinks better albums. You can check it out at www.myspace.com/raydaviesofficial

Ray Davies will be performing at The Orpheum Theater in Boston this Sunday, April 6th at 7:30pm. You better believe I will be there.

Enjoy!

Randy

UPDATE: My son and I took in the Greek Independance Day Parade yesterday in Boston. After it was done we walked across Tremont Street to The Orpheum to catch Ray Davies' performance. We arrived just in time to see Ray show up for the soundcheck. He was gracious and easy going. We spoke briefly and he was grateful that we were there. Oh yeah...the concert.....

Ray's opening act was the newcomer Dana Fuchs. Great voice. Easy on the eyes. Let's move on...
Ray took the stage with the poise and confidence of a legend. Grabbing a mint-colored Strat he opened the show with "I'm not like everybody else" from the early Kinks years. His back up band was good, loose, and a lot of fun to watch. I suspect that not one supporting band member was born before "Give The People What They Want". After the intermission Ray performed a 5 song acoustic set (Apeman, Dedicated Follower of Fashion among others). He delighted the fans with the better songs from his recent solo album. He ended the concert with 3 classic Kinks encores: "Low Budget", "Lola", and "You Really Got Me". I will post pics.

I saw Ray play at the Orpheum I think it was 1975. It was the "School Boys in Disgrace" Tour, so they did a choreographed costume deal with a film playing in back of them. As the film's characters exited from the sides of the movie screen, they came dancing onto the live stage through openings from the back of the screen, appearing to be coming from film to life.
It was a live music video before the invention of music videos. The man has an amazing imagination.
It was an great one of a kind concert. I forget who opened.
