In a stunning display of loyalty, Red Sox players have unanimously voted to boycott today's spring training game in Fort Myers as well as their trip to Japan, if their coaches are not compensated.

The players were under the impression that the Sox coaches were being compensated $40,000, just like the players, for their Season opening trip to Japan. When they found out today that the coaches are not being paid, they held a vote and unanimously decided to boycott.

Jason Varitek just met with the media a few minutes ago in Fort Myers and said that the players are united and that the coaches are "an extension of their family". Kevin Youkilis is the team's player rep and has been dealing with discussions between the team and MLB.

This is certainly about money, but not for the players. The Sox players are standing up for the little guy here, and it's pretty darn admirable.

What do you think

Looks like the Red Sox players have gotten their wish. The Sox are playing their final spring training game in Fort Myers and appear to have averted a boycott of their trip to Japan.

No official word on what transpired, but it appears the players have gotten what they wanted and that the Sox coaches along with the Oakland coaches will be compensated for their trip to Japan.

The Sox were scheduled to fly to Japan at 5:00, but it looks like that flight will be delayed a bit because of todays events.

Butch is on a flight to Japan right now. It looks like the Sox will be joining him in the Far East after all!

Ryan, I watched today's game and the delay before hand. It was nice for the unity of the players for the coaches. That's the kind of guy Varitek has always been. Just for the record, I'm just not sure about this season's opener in Japan. A nice gesture, but I don't think it should count in the standings. Why Japan? I guess it will be interesting to watch.

MLB and all those at the top should be ashamed of themselves. I've said it before and I'll say it again, their actions are downright disgusting sometimes. So much money and they are being misers over $40,000???!!! For coaches that earn it every day?? The nerve. I guess you can't expect anything better from an organization that's demanding money from the Cape Cod League. Disgusting.

As for my Sox....what can I say....been a life long fan and they just gave me another reason to love them even more. I have never been prouder of them than I am right now. Not even winning the 2 World Series beats the feeling of pride I have in them right now. I love them.

phatride,

Nice try at putting their efforts down, but you failed miserably. I'm sure the player's could have pulled the cash from underneath their couch cushions, but that's besides the point. This is MLB's gig, and as such, it is theirs to pay for. They want the Sox to show up in Japan for an exhibition game, they have to pay for that. That wasn't a choice the Sox made. If your boss all of a sudden decides to not pay you, do you expect your coworkers to pull the cash out of their pockets to give it you? NO. You expect your boss/company to pay for your services. Same deal here. What they did drove the point much further for MLB than it would have if they had just emptied their pockets. And even so, the Sox still ended up picking up half the tab. So don't come over here trying to rain on their noble parade.
