I think we're all still in shock when it comes to the Celtics this weekend. I know I thought that the Celts first round series with the Hawks would be a clean sweep.  Instead we're looking at Game 7 at the Garden on Sunday.

We should still be feeling good about the Celtics. If not for the way they've been playing, then for the fact that Atlanta is simply an awful road team. But we do have to ask ourselves, what would it mean if the Celtics did lose?

I personally, would chalk it up as one of the biggest upsets in NBA history. The fact that the Celtics were not only the #1 seed, but without question the best team in the NBA during the regular season. Combine that with Atlanta's 37-45 regular season record and this would be an upset for the ages.

I also think it would be the defining moment of the careers of Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers. KG has always been known as a guy who kind of disappears in the playoffs and cannot win the big game. Doc has a lot to prove in this postseason, and with the roster he has right now, losing in Round 1 to the Hawks, is simply unacceptable.

Hopefully this will all be moot, and the Green will take care of business on Sunday afternoon.

Thoughts?

Ryan,

Not that this is the reason they lost or anything, but it has to be one of the most confusing things about last night's game to me. Please tell me (I'm not huge on basketball and still have A LOT to learn), but WHY....with a FINAL chance to tie the game, with seconds left and the absolute last opportunity to tie it hanging in the balance...WHY.....would they give the ball to Rondo? What happened to say....Garnett? What.....??? (I'm so confused).

Also, how do you get a foul for having fallen on the floor and being unable to get up? (Powe got a foul while he was fallen on the floor. I was confused with that too). Please help me understand.

June, they had to inbound the ball to Rondo, as their quickest guy he had the best shot to bring the ball across halfcourt... of course once he got over there his inexperience showed, he thought there was more time and started looking for guys to pop off screens instead of just looking for a shot.

Thank you Jeff. Because he was inexperienced, I didn't get it. I didn't think about his speed getting down the court. There's no reason for the Celts to have even been in that position to start anyway.

Since they were down 3 points...Garnett was not a good option to go to. I agree Rondo was not a good option. Somehow, they should have gotten the ball to their best 3-point shooter Ray Allen.
As for the officiating, it has been extremely inconsistent throughout the series. The major beef I have is on Paul Pierce's 6th foul. A call away from the ball after the shot went in? Nonsense!

I have tried to take a step back and look at the bigger picture of why the Celtics struggled on the road against the Hawks. Number one is that for the last 4 or 5 weeks of the season they had no pressure on them and coasted into the playoffs. Playoff intensity is something that needs to be experienced and now that the Celtics have gotten their taste I think it will benefit them in the next series. As we found out in the Super Bowl, you can't just flip a switch to turn on your intensity. Let's hope they have a carryover to Cleveland.

I like your post Chopp. The most important game to win is the last. The undefeated season and best record means nothing without it.
