I
've been known to be a skeptical person regarding fad diets.  I've been a constant supporter of self improvement, but a critic on things like gastric bypass, that is, what I consider a forced change.  Self improvement has to come from inside you, not be placed inside you.  A few months back, I completely bashed a lady for going on Fox25 and bragging about how hard it is to lose weight, and her struggle after she got 'gastric bypass surgery'.  I bashed her because I felt that gastric bypass surgery is the cheap, weak way out of a hole you've dug yourself.  Soon after I posted that, I began thinking about how badly I needed to lose weight.

I had people suggest gastric bypass surgery...numerous times.  Shoot, I weighed 450 lbs, I can only assume that people thought that would be my only option.  But no.   My fiance and I decided on a date for our wedding (sept. 20) and at that very minute, I realized that I am not one of the weak, I am not a morbidly obese soul lost in the universe of greasy deliciousness.  I am going to be the proof this world needs that there is no reason to rely on surgery, everything you need is literally at your feet.

So from that day, I started the induction phase of Atkins.  Not only that, but I simply added in 1.6 miles of walking a day.  Now, here I stand, 4 months later and I am proof that you don't need anything by the ability to say no, and 2 feet, to get yourself healthier.  Here's visual proof of the change, and I will update my blog again when I'm drastically closer to my goal weight.

But yeah, one more thing...
GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY IS FOR QUITTERS!  (unless it's literally the last option, not just a last option because your tubby rear won't get up and walk.)

Here is my proof.  This is my holiday party December 2007, and under is July 19, 2008.  At this point, I've been on my diet for just about 4 months.

Versus, You have some nerve to say people who have surgery are weak. Atkins is a wonderful diet and the weight will drop off quickly. A good friend went from 250 to 180 and looked great. Unfortunately one day she decided to have a bagel, and that was the beginning of the end. She has been on every diet and has read every book. She does great and loses weight, but in not to long of time the weight is back and the depression is worse. To make matters even more terrible, she adds another ten pounds. She has finally decided to have surgery. I don't know where you get your information but Exercise is key to it's success. I wish you well with your weight loss and lets talk after you keep it off for a few years.

If you're on a diet, you have a responsibility to constantly watch what you eat. If you're on Atkins, you don't touch bagels. That's a matter of self control, and instead of relying on stitches, go see a psychologist. I don't, and won't need someone else to force my hand away from the pastry dish now or in a few years.

Since January, I've quit smoking cigarettes, and lost over 100 lbs. No surgery, no stupid hypnosis, no nonsense. Just me, overcoming mental weakness.

So, with that being said, I'll restate my initial comment, and I'll stand by it more than willingly. If you can't control yourself, you're weak, and if you need surgery to control it for you then, surgery is for the weak.

Like I said lets see you in 2-3 years. Like we say in AA, you are on a pink cloud.. Good luck to you.

In 2 to 3 years, my opinion that Gastric Bypass Surgery is for weak, will not change. Doubting my ability to carry on a consistent dietary program is not very supportive. Don't they teach you to be supportive in AA?

I had two friends who had gastric bypass. One was over 500 lbs. He died shortly after surgery, but he would have died if he hasn't had it, due to all his health problems. My other friend, is thriving now that her weight is down. Yes, she does have some of the side effects, but for her, this was a choice she had to make.
Weight loss is hard. I lost 40 lbs on Weight watchers and kept it off for 3 years. My mom died, and I put it right back on. I plan on going back now. I read an article that if your weight gain is emotional eating, it is much harder to take off, and keep off. It's it's just over eating or poor choices, it's a bit easier. I applaud you for taking the weight off, but please remember that not everybody is the same, and please have compassion for those who are desperate to lose the weight at any cost.

Versus--First I would like to begin by congratulating you on both your weight loss and quitting smoking. They are both difficult tasks to accomplish, something I know firsthand. However, you really shouldn't be so quick to judge those who have opted to go the route of gastric bypass. I don't know how much you know of this procedure, but, it is far from a cowardly thing to do. It is far from the weak to go through this. The entire procedure takes close to a year of preparation before the surgery. You have to attend informational classes, psych evals, quit smoking prior to acceptance into the program, and you also have to lose 10 % of your current weight before the surgery can take place. After the surgery, you can only eat like a bird. I, personally, wouldn't wish that on anyone. I know several people who have had this procedure done, and it is not easy. It is far more difficult than you would imagine. I am currently on Weight Watchers(have been for the past year), and I can honestly say that I have really followed the program very closely. To date, I have lost 35 pounds, but, I have also hit a brick wall--I have not been able to lose anything for the last 4 months. I have become extremely discouraged, and have been trying very hard not to walk away from it, but I ONLY have another 12-15 pounds to reach my goal. I really want to do this! I have worked way too hard to give up now. Losing weight is not easy, no matter how we go about it! Honestly, I don't agree with the Atkins Diet--I think it is very unhealthy, but that is my own personal opinion). Not bec

K.Nana Please don't get discouraged and try to do whatever it takes to keep a strong mental state. All diets have a plateau. And DM, the stress of your mothers death had to be very hard. I think I know you well enough to know when the time is right it will happen. Like you said, your 500 lb friend would not have have to much time had he not tried the surgery. He and who ever else make this choice is not a coward. Versus insults us all who have weight problems.
I was going to wait till I have had MY SURGERY before I wrote this. I feel being I have the support of 2 very good friends out here KN & DM I will come clean. The person I spoke about above as a friend was me. I lost about 90 lbs on Atkins. I found it to be a very good diet for me. Only problem when after all that time without a carb I finally OD'ed. I lost weight with Weight Watchers and several other diets. As some no, I stopped smoking 3 years this coming Sept. I quit drinking and drugging 7 years ago this Nov. I just can't get the weight thing down. Every time I lose I gain back 10-20 lbs more. I am tied of this merry ground and I am in the process of going for the Lap band. Versus I am not a weak person. I wish you well and hope you find success. I would keep the crowing down for a while so you don't look like the jack-ass you sound like. Got to go, I'm off to Beth Israel to speak to my surgeon. I am hoping by the early fall I can get this done. BYE BYE....

Kayle first off congrats. In my post I said unless completely necessary. I know the procedure as I looked into the surgery myself. When I weighed 450 lbs, I was close to NEEDING the surgery. If you're over a 1/4 of a ton, yeah, you probably need the surgery. And yes, the reason you got that large is due, in large fact, to your weakness for food. Kayle, you're doing it right. Exercise, eat healthy, etc, etc.

Sure getting the surgery and living with it isn't easy, but making the decision to go that route, which is significantly easier than learning to control yourself, I still feel is signs of a weak minded person.

If people can quit meth without a surgery, people can lose weight without a surgery. I'll keep proving it, and in 3 years fenway, I'll make sure to send you a copy of my memoirs called "Diary of the Excuseless." The crowing never stops Fenway.

I'm getting there. From that last picture I've dropped another 35 lbs. I'll add a picture as soon as I get an actual camera. My camera phone might as well be a charcoal rub of how it actually looks. No flash havin piece of crapola. I do appreciate you checking up on me though, sarcastically or not.

Thinly yours,
Vs

I'm a nobody with a big mouth. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I have no idea what I'm talking about. Regardless, there's going to be self deprivation and humor when I write something. (or at least a feeble attempt)
