If you are the Patrick administration, and more specifically Transportation Secretary Bernard Cohen, what is one thing you do not want to do if you have promised a public, open accounting of the Big Dig problems?

The answer? You probably don't want to kick the public out of the very first meeting of the Turnpike Authority since you took over.  It is an especially bad idea when on the agenda of that very fist meeting is the issue of the numerous leaks in the tunnels.

When reporters at the meeting questioned Cohen with respect to the discussion of the leaky tunnels, the esteemed Secretary, a former reporter himself, stated that item must have been placed on the agenda in error. Of course, while Mr. Cohen was lying to the press, Big Dig project manager Michael Lewis was in the conference room, waiting to show the Turnpike Authority a Power Point presentation. The topic of said Power Point? Why the tunnel leak problems of course. This is on top of the news that came out today, the state of Massachusetts is still spending $400,000 a month repairing the hundreds of leaks in the Tip O'Neil tunnel. I don't think it is asking too much when we, the citizens of this Commonwealth, want to know what the hell is going on.

You will find out over time, that Duh-val Patrick is the most dupicitous, sneaky and least transparent governor we've seen ever. He is a disgrace. An absolute disgrace.

Chip,
You're "blaming the victim!" Look to the "powers that be" which made Duval Patrick the headliner for purpose of doing their bidding and taking the heat for dirty politics in play long before Deval arrived on scene. With regard to the Tip O'Neil Tunnel, I'd stay out of there if I were you. I don't know if it's 19 million gallons/month up from 13 million or 1.9 million up from 1.3 million gallons of water PER MONTH leaking (but it's one or the other). The "movers and shakers" which created this project and swiped the billions no one's ever accounted for are the ones which gave out the contracts -- possibly to those developers who could hide defects which would ultimately cause the project to go "g-u-s-h" and then, after removing all the dead bodies, testimonial grieving and cleaning up the accident/disaster, the feds will have to come up with another $24 billion to reopen the corridor. Business as usual for Massachusetts. Stay out of that tunnel. 1 gal. of water leaking per month is too much. X million? Who's kidding who here?

amom....I've been accused of that more than once this wee. If the victim is the perrson who is elected to do what he promises, then I'm guilty as charged.

It does'nt take a genius to figure this one out.The O'neill tunnel is built so poorly that it will have to be closed and rebuilt, but nobody wants to be the one to tell the public this. Why else would Bechtel-Parsons-Brinckerhoff be willing to pay a Billion dollars and be able to walk away from any future liability.
Chip,I agree, there is no way we are going to see leadership from this Governor. From day one it is clear that he is in over his head.I have never seen a politician who tries to avoid the spotlight like him.I'm not saying that he is a bad person,he just not the person for this job.
There has to be a lot more to this than the public knows, hopefully nobody else gets killed in there

Well, seems enough people thought "Free-em All" Deval was the right guy for the job, he was elected. How, I don't know???

Kelldog, I'm guessing that if there was even an inkling that this tunnel has to be rebuilt, they'd close it today and go after Bechtel with a howitzer. I'm thinking there will be consistent little leaks and ongoing inconveniences. I'm thinking Bechtel just wants out from under the publicity, and is willing to pay for it.

But Holy Cow...what's with Duh-val...of all the thngs to veto when yo are about to make a landmark deal lke this...Child Fire Safety Education Money....sheesh...

Ted Kennedy, Deval Patrick, John Kerry, Barny Frank.... The people that keep voting for these people are fools. This state is a laughing stock!
Yesterday was the anniversary of Chevas Ted driving his car off the bridge and killing a beautiful Mary Jo.
They keep promising the minorities welfare programs to keep them in their place and the minorities buy it hook line and sinker thinking a couple of hundred bucks a week is the Holy Grail. The states left wing elite keep pulling the wool over the eyes of the states poor, all to get their vote. So sad!

Chip, I agree with you. Deval is a very willing victim -- sell out the people to the powers that be and annotate his CV to read "corner office" and all the history now attached to his name. Sweet deal but not the kind that is followed by "honor" and "integrity," which I prefer over accumulations of "dirty, green paper." Remember, it was Sal DiMasi that campaigned for "Patrick Murray - he's one of us!" admitted at the Irish Breakfast, 2007. That tunnel has the resiliance of "paper mache holding back a river," in my humble, unqualified opinion, wary of MA politicians for nearing a generation, for which reason I DO NOT DRIVE IN THE TED WILLIAMS TUNNEL - ever.

WinstonWolfe...what you have said has provoked as muchthought in this elderly head as just about anything written here...I had never "spun" the facts this way...but you are right...absolutley right. It is the liberal Democratic system that has enslaved minorities with a failed and unchanged welfare system.

And now guess what? "Press 1 for English..." Not only is English the AMERICAN language, it is the language of employers...the language of financial independence for immigrants. All that is being done to make immigrants feel free to keep their own language only serves to limit their economic success and thus to hasten them to welfare roles...and thus to a live of ghetto living...not because they CAN'T succeed, but because liberal policy has set in motion actions that limit their likelihood of success.

WOW...good thinking!!!

Chip,

Thank you for the kinds words. I wish I could take credit for the thought process but I’ve been reading “Freakonomics” along with excerpts on the web from a book called the “Welfare State – No Mercy for The Middle Class” Here are a couple of paragraphs from “Welfare State”

(Over the past sixty years, America has turned into a welfare or "entitlement" state. Government now takes up to 50 percent of our income in taxes to pay for entitlement programs and regulations. Middle-class taxpayers have become beasts of burden---we pay for handouts, subsidies, and entitlements to an endless list of special-interest groups who demand the money we earn.

How do liberals, Democrats, and too many Republicans justify this legalized theft? They tell you it is your moral duty to "help" others, whether you like it or not. That means you have no right to your paycheck or your profits while others are in "need." If you refuse this alleged moral duty, they call you cruel and mean-spirited.)

If you take it a step further you can look to insurance companies as a villain in making government regulate everything we do or eat. Insurance companies are spending MILLIONS of dollars a year to get us to buckle up, don’t eat trans-fat, don’t drink or eat too much or don’t smoke. All so they can make BILLIONS. The insurance companies will only be insuring folks that don’t leave their house. They don’t want the risk. They tell companies not to hire old, fat people. Before you know it, companies will be giving you pre-employment physicals to see if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or

Who we should be blaming is Mitt Romney who was in office and built the faulty tunnels in the first place. What should he do, not continue to fix them? We are bleeding money for the Highway Dept. even if a kangaroo was in charge of this state after the conception of the "Big Dig". Unfortunately, Deval can't be pinned as bad guy, here.
