Each of us should ask ourselves why we obey Gods commandments. Is it because we fear punishment? Is it because we desire the rewards for living a good life?  Is it because we love God and Jesus Christ and want to serve them? It is better to obey the commandments because we fear punishment than not to obey them at all. But we will be much happier if we obey God because we love him and want to obey him. When we obey him freely he can bless us freely.

Sometimes we may think a commandment is not very important. The scriptures tell us of a man named Naaman who thought that way. Naaman had a dreadful disease and traveled from Syria to Israel to ask the prophet Elisha to heal him. Naaman was an important man in his own country, so he was offended when Elisha did not greet him in person but sent his servant instead. Naaman was even more offended when he received Elisha's message: "wash seven times in the river Jordan". " Are not the rivers of Damascus better than all the waters of Israel? May I not wash in them and be clean?" he demanded. He went away in a rage. But his servants asked him, " If the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, would have you done it? How much rather then, when he sayeth unto thee, wash and be clean?" Naaman was wise enough to understand that it was important to obey the prophet of God even if it seemed a small matter. so he washed in the Jordan river and was healed. 2 KIngs: 5 1-14Sometimes we may think a commandment is too hard to obey, like Abraham being asked to sacrifice his only son. Look at the blessings that came to Abraham because of his obedience, his son was spared and the Lord promised that his seed or posterity shall number as much as the sands on the seashore. And that Jesus himself would be born through his lineage. What an honor. The kingdom of heaven is governed by law, we need to learn obedience now so we will be prepared when we get there.

Zigulis, Christ was perfect yet he was baptized by John the Baptist for the remission of sins. He did it to fulfill all righteousness. To be obedient to his Fathers command. To set the example for us.

Captain, you were so kind to respond to me so many times that I feel I’ve been remiss in not responding to you despite my better judgment that this is all just wasted time. Once you have guzzled the Kool-Aid to the point that one is Jehovah Witness, it’s like convincing a die-hard Sox fan that Jeter is a good shortstop, but what the heck, maybe some light can penetrate the walls you’ve constructed…

Human beings, for the most part, are motivated out of self-preservation. The older one gets, the more “self-preserving” one gets as demonstrated by all the old people kneeling in the front pews while the young slouch towards the back. This is the natural, normal and how the ego functions.

When one does not want to die—and who in their right mind wants to die—one begins to look for a way out…a way to continue the self beyond the limitations placed upon all living things. And there are hundreds of sects, religions, and philosophies to choose from that all give alternatives to this final end. Most in this country have sought out Xtianity due to its popularity here, but if you were born in Saudi Arabia, you’d probably be a Muslim.

Whatever the faith one belongs to, there are certain rules set down by that faith that will get you into paradise. Each church/faith has it’s own set of rules and depending upon the individual they gravitate to the tenets that are most congruent with their lifestyle. In your particular case, you have the Bible, which contains the 10 Commandments, and you have supplemental books from your Church’s founder. This faith of yours is the one be

best suited to you, but maybe your next-door neighbor is a Lutheran, and maybe the people next to them are Jewish—different religions—same purpose.

The main reason why anyone reaches out to faith, maintains that faith, follows a prescribed doctrine as THE way is because they want to extend what the real world cannot. This is neither unique, nor special. You are just acting naturally in order to save your self. Freud figured all this out decades ago, and the Buddha 400 years before Jesus was just a twinkle in Joseph’s eye. What I’m writing here is not ground breaking, but because it goes to the center of the human condition, most can’t even entertain the possibility that death really is the end.

Sorry to unwrap the mystery so coldly, but that’s just what it is: self-preservation and what people are willing to do based upon their own needs to preserve that existence.

Hansonman, When the time comes and it will come to all of us. Our eternal spirit that dwells within our temporal bodies will leave our bodies and go to the presence of him who created us. And our bodies will be put in the grave. Meanwhile our father in Heaven (God) will place our spirits in an environment of happiness or misery depending on how we treated our fellow men, families and what kind of works we did wether they were good or evil. The standard being set by Gods Son Jesus Christ. There we will wait until the resurrection, were our bodies and spirits will be reunited and we will rise with perfect bodies perfect and immortal. Then we will be judged by Jesus Christ he being the only one worthy one to do so with love and mercy. Jesus taught that in my fathers house there are many mansions. That means there are many places for people to go and spend eternity specially prepared for them. Through modern revelation through the Prophet Joseph Smith and recorded in the book Doctrine and Covenants we learn that we can be together with family forever, if we lived Christ like lives on earth. The highest of gods blessings. There will come a time when you will kneel before Jesus Christ and confess that he is the Christ for he has said in scripture. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ. Romans:11,12. My 85 year old uncle was just like you Hansonman and he passed away in January. At his deathbed in Concord at Emerson Hospital in the presence of his family he asked my brother and me and my father to give him a blessing and prayer. When the time com

Like my husband said--his uncle was a staunch vocal atheists. Always putting down our families beliefs, and stuff like that. He became that way in WWII when he went to Europe and saw all the starving children and gold laden churches. His faith was destroyed. I do not believe that people are born not believing in God--I work too much w/ children--something happens in their life--an unhappy event that crushes their spirit. But on his death bed, he called my husband's family to pray for him. Then he passed away. There are no athesists on a deathbed.

Of course there are no atheists on a deathbed…that is exactly my point that all of you keep missing, or ignoring! The most powerful instinct that human mind possesses is the instinct for self-preservation. You can see this most evidently on murder victims…their hands and arms mutilated in any effort to save the body. These are called “defensive wounds” and it demonstrates how powerful the mind is when life and death are at stake.

Now if I asked you under normal circumstances to cut off your own hand you’d be like, “no freaking way,” but under the threat of total extinction the body gladly offers up an expendable appendage in any attempt to save the whole self.

Now, if the mind is capable of this unlearned, instinctual reaction, what do you think the mind does in regards to the belief in an afterlife? Of course no one wants to die, and that is why everyone believes in heaven, or nirvana, or reincarnation—anything just so as we won’t have to die.

Not all of us atheists are like your uncle; having had some terrible experience cause us to lose faith in god. Some of us, like myself have arrived at our atheism through Biblical study, early Xtian history, and theosophy.

I’m only happy your uncle had the honesty and fortitude to accept his true fate for the majority of his life and only fell to the inevitable weakness of believing that it wasn’t really over until the very end. He must have been a great guy—living every moment as like it was the last. I hope I can make it that long!

He was a wonderful person with tremendous weaknesses that we all overlooked. His personality was very funny and gregarious. He had many friends. He was haunted with constant failure in business and a estranged relationship with his wife. My cousins always felt his love and they loved him back. He was a tortured soul always dreaming of material things always out of his reach. He spent the last two years of his life living with my father as his roomate. They took care of each other. He died broke, expressing his love to his family.
