It's a 10 million to 1 shot,  But golden boy Mitt Romney is slipping in Iowa.  I personally think alot of the hype is media driven, but that's all it might take to push  Mitt and his boys to do some drastic things.  We already see He's about to make a major speech about his Mormonism.  Should have been done months ago.  Will we find out if his miracle bloomers can help. Yeah, I know you are all laughing and saying "Hey Fenwaydav, Your girl Hilliary is fairing well in Iowa either."  I think she has less to lose if she loses in Iowa than Romney.  We"ll see, it only takes one trip in tank with a helmet on to push you to the point of no return. I just don't think Obama has what it takes to pull this one off.  Hey I've been wrong before. I'd even be willing to look more closely at Mr. Huckabee.  I think if the polls are right and Mike pulls a win out of Iowa, Mitt can kiss his 10 million dollars  and a chance of becoming President goodbye.

I posted a blog on this topic a few days ago, unfortunately it got posted literally at the same time the Clinton hostage crisis came down. Nonetheless, while it's still a little too early to say for sure, he certainly has a legitimate chance at winning the nomination. I think what's more likely is that he beats Romney in Iowa, thereby destroying Romney's campaign for the White House but in the end Huckabee succumbs to Rudy. Unless donations start pouring in should he win Iowa, he's going to have a money/organization problem in the Feb. 5th states. Don't count out McCain either, he's been coming on like gangbusters in NH.

chris,

What do you think Romney's "Religioin" speech will do?

It is difficult to predict what impact the speech will have. I think the comparisons to JFK's speech on his catholicism are incorrect however. In the 1960 election many people were concerned that Kennedy would be heavily influenced by the Pope. As far as I know (perhaps the captain could help me out here) there is no figure in the Church of LDS that is comprable to the Pope. The problem Romney has as I see it is many people do not see the Church of LDS as a Christian denomination. That is what this speech needs to address. I'm betting there are a great deal of people who don't know a whole lot about the Mormon faith, this is his opportunity to lay out what it is the Mormon faith is all about, what its principles are, its beliefs are and he needs to tell people why the Church of LDS is a Christian denomination in spite of what some see as beliefs that fly completely in the face of the true Christian faith. Romney's challenge is much different than Kennedy's challenge. Kennedy had to assure people that he wouldn't be influenced by Rome, Romney basically has to convince people that he is a Christian.

ahumbleman, I think Iowa is going to tell the story for Romney. He has 10 million in Iowa alone. If he loses I think there will be a shift in where the money goes, and I think Huckabee will benefit. I will remain with Hilary unless of course she drops out or doesn't get the nomination. If and when that happens I would reassess my options. Rudy is a Loser, and Obama I don't think is ready for it. Which leaves Paul or Huckabee if one of those two start moving up. If McCain starts moving, that's another possibility.
I think this speech Romney is going to give could be his trip in the tank with the helmet.(please God Please). As you see Chip I could be somewhat flexible.

I find the location of the speech equally as interesting as the content. I think you're right, chris. It's really, from my perspective, unfortunate that those who are "religious" enough to think that a Southern Bible-belt Baptist is the conservative answer, don't even know that LDS is a Christian religious denomination.

Maybe I'm being too....critical?

I'm not sure that they don't know LDS is a Christian denomination, it is that they don't ACCEPT LDS as being part of the Christian faith. Huckabee was asked on a Sunday morning talk show if he thought Mitt Romney was a Christian, and he asnwered that by saying that is a question Mitt Romney has to answer for himself. Looking at his facial expressions when answering that question, I got the feeling that on the inside he was thinking "no Mitt Romney is not a Christian, the LDS is not a Christian church." And the thing is, I'm not convinced that if Huckabee or anyone else came out said that, that it would hurt them at all.

Now...chris...isn't that religious intolerance by a Presidential candidate? Coupled with a bit of religious ignorance?

I mean...it's not like Mike Huckabee's Baptist Church isn't a bit different from my Congregational church in terms of beliefs......

ahumbleman & dav, I agree with you 100% Huckabee has been coming on strong and is a legitimate candidate. I think Romney's speech on his Mormon religion may raise some eyebrows with other Religious organisations which could tank him in Iowa. If that happens, your right your going to see a shift in where the money goes and I can't help but see that Huckabee is going to be a big recipient of that money.

I guess that's why he hasn't come right out and said it...;). I do think deep down Huckabee probably thinks that Romney is not a Christian, but the truth is (the sad truth you may call it) is that view is probably widely held throughout many of the evangelicals that Romney has been trying to court. Many of the VALUES of the Christian churches and the Mormon churches are quite similar, but there are significant doctrinal differences between traditional Christian churches and the LDS. If Romney in his speech is going to try and convince evangelicals that Mormonism and Christianity are one in the same, he's going to run into an enormous amount of difficulty.

I'm sure he's not going to try to tell ANYONE that there are no doctrinal differences, Chris. I'm betting he will avoid the "minutiae' of doctrine and talk about his beliefs and how they shape his ethinc. I'm betting his speech will not differ from what captainseapig offers us here. And those offerings resonate well at MY home address.

I guess we'll wait and see....but.....BUT...if Mr. Huckabee IS intolerant...I'll ask it again!!! What does THAT say about him as a candidate?

If Huckabee came out and said Mitt Romney shouldn't get the Republican nomination because he is a Mormon, and mormonism isn't Christianity I think he would get a fairly severe negative backlash. But if Huckabee, (or any other candidate for that matter) came out and said that while he respects Mitt Romney, he doesn't feel that LDS is a Christian denomination, that the doctrinal differences between LDS and tradiational Christian theology are simply to great for Mormons to be considered true Christians, would that make him intolerant?

If he told YOU Chris that the doctrinal differences made Catholicism, how would YOU feel? Would feel he was intolerant?

Here goes again folks. If I said it once I said it a million times. Go to www. LDS.org and read about basic beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There you will find all the answers you seek. And the answers MItt will probably give. We are not a divided church what one member says, all the other members, will say, all over the world only in different languages. Ask me I will be happy to answer any questions you have. Fenway take it easy on the comments about Mormons garments. They are sacred to members of the church. Much like a priest or rabbi wears his clerical garments on the outside i.e.: white collars, robes and large hats. symbolic scarfs and the like. Mormons make sacred covenants or promises in the temple, to God and Jesus Christ, the garments remind them of those promises and covenants. They are worn under the regular street cloths. They are most sacred and holy and taken very seriously. I don't see this as a Presidential race anymore, I see it as a huge missionary moment for the church were the whole world will be listening to the basic beliefs of a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One of our 19 year old missionaries could give the same speech. Over 60 thousand of them do it every day to someone. This will just be a bigger audience.

As far as political ramifications. Americans will embrace Mitt and his beliefs. Look at the Mormon tabernacle Choir who doesn't love them, or Steve Young, The Marriotts, The Osmonds, President of Dell Computers, President of Jet Blue, Orrin Hatch on the Judicial committee, Gladys Knight, not the Pips though. Ricky Shreoder ( NYPD Blue), Don Bluth, Wilfred Brimly. The list goes on and on. Ask Steve Young if his Mormonism influenced his game with the San Francisco Giants:)

captqain, captain, captian...If I've said it once, I've said it a million times...it's the San Fransisco FORTY NINERS (49'ers)...not the Giants!!! :-)

You left out Danny Ainge....GM of the Boston Celtics, who put the team together that has fewer tattoos than any other NBA franchise, and more wins.....

Captain, You are right and I do apologize. I'll do my best to reframe from making fun of these garments. You mention Christian and Jewish garments. There is no secret to these things. They are worn in plain sight. But anyway, that's not the point. You menioned a site where people can go. I hope you don't mind if I also mention a site. www.mormoncurtain.com

Fenway, Mormoncurtain.com is a blatantly anti Mormon site. Written by enemies of the church. Filled with falsehoods and warped perspectives. Embittered excommunicated members and antagonists contribute to it.
Like my wife said you don't go to Burger King to find out about MacDonalds. Go to www.lds.com for correct information. Fenway the covenants we make are not secret they are sacred. Anyone who sincerely joins the Mormon church and abides by it's teachings can enter the temple and partake of the things taught there.

What we are watching on this screne, before our eyes, is religious intolerance. It is racism that isn't covered as well by the press because the faces are white. This is not an "all wrong" or "all right" situation, like most in life.

Dammit, I don't agree with a number of the doctrines of LDS...nor do they with my Congregationalism. But I can honestly say this, I have been humbled here more times than I want to remember by the basic decency of the thought process captainseapig shows....consistently. Fenwaydav...LDS has to be doing smething right...alot right...for this man to be so basically decent, and attributes some proportion of his values to his church.

A it's time for decent men to crawl off the bakcs of Mormons....if for this reason alone.

Sermon over...
