You people who don't ride the T may think this new campaign is a good idea.  Police were at stations today handing out fliers about this new campaign.  On a crowded T if a man touches you, scream out loud take there picture on your cell phone do what ever it takes to get attention.  Are you NUTS?   If I had a dollar for every time I have gotten touched I'd be rich.  The morning and afternoon  trains are packed so tight,  there is no way someone isn't going to touch you.   They are not only talking gropes,  an innocent touch can be taken for more than it is.  You are going to have a train of paranoid men.  I'd like to see the day when a woman starts to scream I touched her inappropriately.   My boyfriend and I will take her and the T to court.......

Chip, I always said if I ever did anything to get sent to prison (God Forbid)My luck I would wind up in Framingham. But get on a crowded bus or train and try not to touch anyone.

Fenway,

I see Daisy is back in the pic. I like it. :)

I looked at the posters on the train today and my first thought was: "Yeah, ok, good luck making this work without somebody screaming rape for no reason". You are absolutely right. If I could scream everytime I'm 'touched' the blue line would never make it out of my station. I think they are giving some folks too much credit by not being specific about what is considered "groping". We'll hear about this. Soon.

Dave, I can just see it now. Eventually, the ACLU will find enough free time on their hands and protest this. I can hear you saying "That's good!" now, but consider this: Knowing the ACLU, it won't be on behalf of someone like you who accidentally bumped into someone. It'll be on behalf of someone who intentionally gropes women. Most likely, the guy will be a minority (pick one, any one), and they'll decide that this policy is in fact racist and a complete violation of civil rights.

Oh, and as to Framingham? Yeah. You really DON'T want to wind up there. But, if you managed to escape, there's an auto auction yard right across the street. You'd blend in with the employees just fine. :P

Hi June and Xantun, Both of you make great points. Another point if I may. Couldn't those cops handing out the literature been doing some other detail and let the guy giving out the Metro do that? With all the talk about Police doing details for useless things.

Xantun....you're as bad as I am!!! I think THIS is one of those situations where it was handled better in the "good ole days".....one responsibe "woman respecting" passenger outdoes 1000 posters...

And a "not afraid to defend herself by any non-lethal means necessary" female passenger goes a long way too, Chip. Dave's right about the trains- when they're packed, they're really packed. It's not like someone, even if they ARE groping women on purpose, is going to be dashing off down an empty train or bus during rush hour. A well-placed elbow (or knee) is FAR more efficient than just screaming and taking pics with a camera phone.

Dave, I thought it was T police handing this stuff out? If it is the T cops, then no, they need to be hanging around in the stations and on trains for serious issues. If it's Boston Police, then yeah, I'd say give the duty to the people handing out the Metro cards.

Xantun, It was the transit police. That's what I mean, let them ride the trains. A perfect solution is to hold your hands over your head, or just cut them off all together.....I almost feel like going down and riding the T now. You think 5 PM a good time?

Dave, they should definitely be on the trains, but they already have decoys...Wonder if that's causing an issue for having uniformed officers on there too? And if you're going to ride the T at 5PM, make it on a Friday. Or, if you want to go later, just wait until after the next major sporting event.

Chip, much to the dismay of the folks calling this a good program, to truly defend yourself, male and female alike, the first key is to determine if the situation is truly one that requires defense. So, if someone bumps into me, I'm not about to automatically smack them. But, should the need to do so arise, then whoever is on the receiving end better pray that I don't have any change in my pockets! (Quarters really DO make good makeshift brass knuckles, surprisingly.)

Xantun,

One good karate chop to the throat is a great one too! :)

Absolutely, June, if you can get the elbow room to deliver one. And ever so much more effective at getting the point across. Of course, on the train, you can always scream AFTER you deck the pervert and make sure they get busted, but why cop out of your own defense?

I think I'd rather wait until I have him nice and hurt before turning him over. After all, once I give him to police I won't get my chance anymore, LOL!

True story: I take kickboxing. It's pretty good self-defense (of course, it won't be as effective against a weapon, but one has to try). Anyway, on my way home from the gym about 2 months ago, I was walking home and this guy stayed in step with me the entire way. About 2 blocks in, I realized he was in fact following me. If I slowed, he slowed. If I sped up, so did he. It's amazing but my entire body became aware of his every move. I shut off my ipod, took my keys in my hand, tensed and prepared to attack the hell out of him. When I reached my corner, I walked out onto the middle of the street with a green light (traffic halted) turned around and charged him while everyone was watching. He ran off. He didn't expect that. I've been more careful since.

You know guys and gals, on a packed train with no where to move and you feel something you think you shouldn't, just take your hand and reach back and squeeze. It's the perfect move for tight places and will make a BIG POINT. This campaign is going to cause More problems then help.....

Dave, all this campaign is going to do is help bankrupt the T even further. (False arrests leading to huge lawsuits.) It's not going to do much, if anything, about stopping intentional groping. I'm all for them looking into ways to stop the problem, but this isn't the solution. There's got to be more effective ways to handle this.
