Like the song Bette Midler sings "From a Distance"  The Longfellow Bridge looks like a work of art connecting Boston to Cambridge.  Also called the Salt and Pepper bridge for the towers that resemble a sat and pepper shaker.  First take a walk or drive over it.  (if you dare) You will see chunks of concrete lying on the side of the roadway.  The walkway is OK if you keep you head looking down so you don't trip on the humongous gaps. If that's not scary enough, take a look at what's going on underneath.  If you don't want to lower yourself by rope to do this, take a trip on the Duck Tour.  As you travel under it just pray that this isn't the moment.  The decaying rust and falling concrete would have Longfellow himself turning in his grave.  Now alot of roadways  like The Storrow Drive are also in desperate need of immediate care, but Storrow Drive does not span over water.  If the City has closed the bridge to only one lane of traffic in each direction and totally banned it to foot traffic on the 4th of July, things are bad.  Very bad.  If I were you I wouldn't go within a mile of this bridge on top or underneath.   Remember, it's bad luck if the salt shaker falls and spills the salt.  The pepper will be close behind....

And...no fireworks this year!!! Not that that is a problem for me...we have them on my lake in NH...where fireworks are legal and plentiful.

It is still fine to walk over. I did so a month back. The view of Beacon Hill from The Longfellow is very nice.

No fireworks? Not even on the Esplanade? That sucks. I don't ever go, but still....that sucks.

Elite One, It is fine to walk over, but you have to be careful of a rut now and then. And it will be closed the 4th to foot traffic. June, the best seat in the house is on TV.

I love this bridge and it is too bad it has been neglected.

You're right, fenway. That's where I would watch them from. Also, my father-in-law lives across the beach from Winthrop and we always watch the firework show they put on every 4th. They do a great job and we watch it from my father-in-laws front porch. Great fireworks, no crowds! :)

June I was able to see the Boston fireworks from my Apt. We have that new building on Boylston Street and I am not sure if it will block some or all of the view. The ugly giant has totally distroyed my view of Fenway Park. I am looking into moving there.

That's an outrage. The people that moved there for the view should be refunded some money, don't you think?

Not really June. First of all my Apt. I don't think was meant for views. A few have them, but the ones in the front face other buildings. This is life in the big city. I'm glad I caught you over here instead of the funeral blog. I just wrote a blog about Daisy, it just happened today. I put it in the entertainment section. Look for it. It may not wind up on the main page.

fenwayday, I don't think it is that bad structurally....rust isn't dangerous per se on those big beams.
I does need things done, but pockets don't get lined by magic in Massachusetts, and for some strange reason bridge repair takes literally 10 times longer than California.
Think for a minute.....if there were to be a collapse, the worst loss of life would be if thousands of people were crowded onto it.

While they are overplaying it, the microcosmic chance they can't rule out would say the very first thing they have to stop is having that many people on it.

HD, When was the last time you took a trip under it? Look I am not a engineer and I don't even play one on TV. I know I wouldn't have a Bar Mitzvah there and dance the Hora.....

This is my semi annual profile update. Live in the West Fenway section of Boston with my cat Daisy (pictured). Came to Ma. about 30 years ago from Nu Yawk. If we had a conversation you would think I just got off the boat. I lived in Waltham, Bedford, Lowell and now Boston. Never ever was a sports fan in NY. My family hates that I am now a dedicated Red Sox Fan. I was in the Navy, I drove a Taxi in NY, I worked for the VA, and now have a disability retirement from the Post Office. I am a Jewish, Gay man in my mid 50's. I am a registered democrat who has voted for Nixon and Reagan and I don't care what you think about my social or political views.
