I just saw what happened in Dunstable.  An ambulance crashed into a house killing the 21 year old driver and the 57 year old patient in the back.  How does something like this happen?  The whole story wasn't out yet.  I think 21 might be a bit young for someone to be driving an ambulance.  Was he properly trained? and if so, is he responsible enough to handle such a serious job?  I guess we'll see, but I don't think so.

SirB

I know you wrote this before the ten oclock news and at that time they were saying that the driver had some sort of medical issue what it was is not known or if it was a preexisting thing or not that will come out in the next few days I'm sure.

As for training and the age, I have worked as an EMT for over 5 years now, and I have seen many 18, 19, 20 and 21 year olds in the feild and they all go thought the same training. I believe that its now 120 hours of class time plus a state test. And most companys (I can't speak for this particluar one)have a very exstencive on the job training time. As for being responsible enough I can't speak for this EMTs, but the young EMTs I have known most have been very responsible and know what they are doing and take thier job very serously. I hope this help with some of you questions.

And remember THIS: Patriot ambulance pays 9 or 10 bucks an hour tops for their EMT's. Don't criticize them...thank the Good Lord that anyone would pick up your blood and puke for that money!!!

Chip,
How do you know what they get paid? It is irrelevant anyway. This is the line of work they chose for themselves. I can criticize if I want. That's what these blogs are for. The whole story isn't out yet. So lets wait and see.

They more then like the pay is close to 12 buck now, that seemes to the the average now. Which still is not a lot for the thing that we have to see and do

They deserve to get paid more than that. One person can barely survive on such a small wage.

No, sirB, AMR in Worcester is paying their basics 12....that is Worcester County's high end. How I know is that I was one. I had a 5 digit OEMS number, actually. I trianed EMT's through both Mt. Wachusett CC, and Quinsig. I taught for one of the original and most highly respected EMS trainers in Mass.

Most dedicated EMT's work too many hours just to take care of their families, or to pay for Paramedic school. To lay this alone at the feet of an individual EMT is wrong.

And yes, you can criticize if you want. I can think you are an ungrateful jerk if I want....Mexican standoff huh?

Chip,
Pay attention to what is being said here. It was onemansopinion who originally commented on the pay wage, not me. I am most certainly NOT an ungrateful jerk. You don't know me. I'm simply questioning how this happened and if you read my comments you will see that. I never once badmouthed EMT's. I respect what they do. We need them. I say they deserve to get paid more than what they get, and you call me ungrateful. That makes no sense. You don't strike me as one who is very bright. There is clearly no mexican stand off here. Get with it.

This is terribly sad. Both families are grieving an unforseeable and freak accident. Whatever the cause, whatever the pay scale, in my humble opinion, I am furious that the ambulance drivers are paid so little respect on the road. My heart twists with indignation when I see the crowded highway NOT MOVE AN INCH until the sirening ambulance is right on the bumper behind them. This has to be one of the worst examples of collective insolence and greed that there is. GET THE HE** OUT OF THE WAY AND RESPECT THESE DRIVERS! Sympathies to the affected families....

I'm with it. Reread what o wrote, it is slanted toward blaming the inividual before the facts are in. I stan by what I wrote. Do you see most people who hold you accountable as not bright?

Chip,
Accountable for what? I'm stating my opinion that 21 might be to young to be an ambulance driver. Nothing more. I didn't come out and say it was his fault, and made a point to say we don't know the whole story lets wait and see. Re-read what I wrote. I think you just like to jump down people's throats. This is a perfect place for that. That's why your here.

amomholsmany,
I remember when my mother was being rushed to the hospital. She was in bad shape. I was following the ambulance, and was stunned by how people put little effort into getting out of the way. That really bothered me. I almost took it personally. Ignorance is in abundance on the roadway.

so you know that 12 dollars is not just an AMR thing but that is the standared for most companys is has nothing to do with being in worcester.

Also can people stop calling us AMBULANCE DRIVERS and call us EMTs that what we are we do ALOT more then just DRIVE AMBULANCE!!!!

onemansopinion,
Sorry, your right. EMT's I guess I titled my blog "Ambulance Driver's" because that is how the headline's in the news stated him.

In case anyone really wanted to know what happened to that young driver, according to the news report(with an interview given by his sister),it was determined that this poor young driver died from a heart attack. The accident had nothing to do with his lack of experience or training.

That is very unfortunate. My heart goes out to the family and friends. 21 is far to young to die of a heart attack, to die period.
