Ok so you are getting ready to go on vacation, you are at the airport and you need your ID ready at all times PROVING it is YOU flying on their airplanes.  You are checked, re-checked, triple checked, etc. you are who you say you are.  Then tell me this.  How is it that you can go before a judge, in a courtroom, legalizing and finalizing a divorce, a LIFE ALTERING event, enter into a  binding agreement and not once are you asked to provide proof of who you are?
I was FLOORED today when I appeared for my divorce hearing.  My ex and I (who arrived together and are very amicable), sat amongst 6 or so other couples to finalize their divorce. They call your name, you go up to the judge and state your name, raise your right hand, and that's it!  Never once showing any proof of identification.  I don't know who, if anyone, would pose as someone else for a hearing but just thought it was so odd.  Also, to get a hearing in Massachusetts, if there are children involved, you must register for a Parents Apart parenting class.  Again, no ID required. I could have sent someone in my place and they would have never been the wiser (which btw, anyone who knows me knows I could never do such a thing but there are those who would!!).
Anyone else find this odd?  My friend told me she didn't think it was a big deal and perhaps it isn't.  But in today's day in age where you can't buy a scratch ticket without proving you are of age,  you'd think that you should prove to the courts that you are who you say you are, no?

Hi Smiley...
I do find it quite odd when and where ID is required. I was actually carded at the grocery store for cough medicine the other day.
The one I find the oddest is voting. I think that should be a requirement.
I am divorced, I just think the judge knows that the attorneys have already verified who you are. As for the parenting class, that was just a joke.

Smiley--you are so right--it is very strange. I had to have an MRI recently, and when I finished with my end of the paper work, the woman asked me for my driver's license. I was shocked, and asked her why. She told me that she had to have a copy of it for the insurance company as proof that it was, in fact, me. Who, in their right mind, would have an mri for someone else? I thought that was very bizarre--In all the times I have gone for any type of testing, I have NEVER had to produce any identification. I also went to the store one day to buy a pack of cigarettes for my daughter, and I was carded. I started laughing; I thought it was a joke--the clerk told me he had to prove that I was 18. I told him I was flattered but not stupid. I may look good for my age, but not that good. No amount of plastic surgery could make me look 37 years younger than I am; I will be 55 next week. So, yes, it is very selective where and when we are Id'd. Very strange!

Chrissy--Did you know that, now, when you buy cough syrup or any type of cold or sinus medication, they take your information and put it into a database to keep track of how much of it you buy? If I am not mistaken, you can only buy one at a time, also. I get wicked sinus headaches, so I went to Walmart one day to get some sinus pills, and I couldn't find them on the shelves anywhere, so I went to the pharmacy counter. I was told that they had to keep them behind the counter because one of the ingredients in them was being used to make some kind of illegal drug(I forget which one it is). It is truly incredible!!! God forbid we get sick and need anything over the counter anymore. They make you feel like a criminal!

Hey FoxFan,I agree w/the lawyer thing if any of had lawyer representation .. none of the three uncontested divorce hearings had any representation! I know amazing, you need to prove who you are to get cough medicine but can get a divorce w/out an ID? BOY! Kayleisnana an MRI? eh? wow ... amazing!! Altho, I love getting carded for my cocktails even if they know im over 21 ... by quite a few years!!! :)

Donna....the cough syrup thing is because one of the ingredients is used in the making of "crank"....methamphetimine...good law I guess...

Smiley...give me the "downside", from yur perspective, of NOT being carded for a divorce. I'm not being fresh here...I want what you think might happen.

Oh Chip...sadly, not everyone is as great as we are ;)
Ok .. check this out for a scenario. Husband and Wife split. One of them REALLY wants out, other notsomuch. The one who wants out meets Mr./Mrs. wonderful and doesn't like that the divorce isn't final. The one who wanted out wants to file for a divorce uncontested (moves quicker less involved. Other refuses divorce. This can DRAG the divorce YEARS! The one who wants out gets documents together. Able to petition joint divorce uncontested. Brings necessary docs into court brings a friend as stand in and voila DIVORCED! Um yeh I guess you'd get caught but it's their word against the other that they werent there. ? Ok maybe that's a stretch but you made me come up w/a scenario! I just found the whole thing odd that our IDs were never checked, perhaps Im the crazy one!! But there are some coo coo's out there that could pull off such a crazy stunt! Luckily me and my ex are cool and actually drove in to court together, yeh I know bizarre! Well trying to play nice! :)
